Inside Our AirLab: The CRFB Testing

On June 11, 2025, in news, by Michael

The Corsi-Rosenthal (CR) Box is a popular DIY air cleaner that offers an affordable solution to improve indoor air quality. This is especially important during events like wildfires and pandemics, where reducing indoor pollutants is crucial. The downside to the Corsi-Rosenthal Box is that users need to rebuild the entire box to replace filters, limiting its practicality over time.

Introducing the CRFB Filter Cube

HVACQuick’s newest system, inspired by the Corsi-Rosenthal Box.

The CRFB is engineered for efficient and affordable air filtration without the complexities of a full HVAC installation. It’s built with sustainability in mind, utilizing reclaimed materials to transform potential waste into a practical defense against common airborne threats.

What sets the CRFB Apart?

Superior Filtration

Each CRFB includes five 1″ MERV 13 filters, essential for capturing particles such as wildfire smoke, airborne pathogens, and allergens.

Easy Filter Replacement

Elastic filter straps make swapping filters quick and hassle-free.

Durable and Maintainable

A rugged aluminum frame provides long-term durability and is easy to wipe down and maintain.

Quick Assembly

User-friendly design makes setup fast and frustration-free.

What Does the AirLab Say?

CFM

We ran the CRFB through a range of filter configurations in our AirLab, comparing results against a standalone Mainstays 20″ Box Fan (see on Walmart).

We tested performance with 1,2,3,4, and 5-filter setups.

As expected with any filter box, airflow dropped when filters were added. However, increasing the number of filters also increased the total surface area, which in turn reduced static pressure and improved overall airflow, a key performance advantage of the CRFB.

Energy Usage

Power consumption was found to be consistent across filter setups, varying only with fan speed.

Even at high speed, running the CRFB continuously for a full week costs just $1.50, based on the U.S. average electricity rate.

Affordable, Sustainable Clean Air

With high-performance filtration, simple maintenance, and low operating costs, the CRFB offers a sustainable and cost-effective solution for clean indoor air, perfect for schools, offices, and homes alike.

The Filter Cube is inspired by the Corsi-Rosenthal Box, which is a DIY open-source air cleaner design developed by Dr. Richard Corsi and Jim Rosenthal.
